Title: Mobile Learning
Date: December 11-13, 2006
Venue: Charlotte , NC |
| Overview |
Mobile Learning (m-Learning) or education on the go represents the next
step in the long tradition of technology-mediated learning. It expands and maximizes the boundaries
of anytime, anywhere learning. m-Learning is made accessible through the use of personal digital
assistants (PDAs) and next generation mobile phones, MP3 players, ultra notebooks, and other portable devices.
Mobile devices are increasingly becoming popular across college campuses nationally and internationally due
to high bandwidth infrastructure. Students are able to access educational content, activities and services
from anywhere and at anytime. The use of PDAs and next generation mobile phones, and MP3 players are increasing.
Many students have their own mobile phones (and MP3). Others have more powerful mobile devices including game
players and ultra notebook computers. Unfortunately, the educational system is not geared to exploit the benefits
of these technological advancements. Do we outlaw these devices or take advantage of their capabilities? Educators
are being challenged to consider how mobile devices contribute to learning. Mobile learning promises to extend
convenience and access and to foster alternative practices. Join us for the Mobile Learning conference where national and internationally recognized instructors
in the area of ubiquitous technologies will explore building and implementing m-learning,
creating interactive and collaborative m-learning, emerging hardware and software, evaluating the
quality of m-learning, and investing m-learning social software and implications. By the end of
this conference, participants will gain the knowledge to:
- Select the most appropriate mobile device and to design learning materials for mobile learning
- Decide what applications enable an effective learning community
- Identify the support systems needed to be in place for m-learning
- Understand how wireless and mobile technology has the potential to increase flexibility for distance learners

| Who Should Attend |
Information technology professionals, librarians, content developers,
instructional designers, faculty, department heads, deans, and administrators who are interested
in enhancing learning with designing content and developing systems for mobile devices and wireless
networks. After attending this conference participants will be able to:
- Add mobile learning and performance to their learning technology toolbox and plan and design effective mobile learning programs
- Select the appropriate mobile and wireless technologies to solve performance and productivity problems
- Define the criteria for selecting the appropriate kind of mobile and wireless technology
- Differentiate between learning/courseware models and performance support in the context of mobile technology
- Integrate learning and knowledge support with day-to-day tasks and workflows
Conference participants do not need to be technically savvy to benefit from
this conference; basic understanding of distance learning,
instructional design, electronic performance support is desirable.

Time: 9:00 - 10:15 a.m.
Session Title: Real World Mobile Learning Experiences |
| Higher Education institutions are eager to learn how to benefit from Mobile/Wireless
systems for learning. In this new area, attendees will learn from real-world experiences
and practical ideas that they can apply in their own initiatives beyond just high level
concepts. Just like the Internet and Web transformed online learning in a fundamental way
(from a classroom and stand-alone desktop based learning to a networked education paradigm),
the advent mobile and wireless technologies have the potential to transform learning yet
again to the next level.
What is the impact of pervasive or mobile technologies in expanding the classroom
learning experience? This session explores emerging mobile learning technologies and
real-world examples of mobile learning. Key topics include:
- Key trends in mobile and wireless technology
- Opportunities for developing learning applications on mobile and wireless platforms
- Using mobile learning to augment classroom learning
- Blending traditional classroom and mobile learning paradigms
- Case studies in mobile learning

Session Title: Create, Manage, and Deliver Mobile Learning |
| In this tutorial you will experience the complete cycle of content
creation and publishing to mobile devices. Attendees will be given access
to free tools and account to build their own mobile content. No knowledge
of programming or scripting is needed. Just bring a short tutorial or
storyboard that you would like to publish to mobile devices.
In this session you'll learn:
- How to author and review instructional content
with interactive activities and assessments using web based templates
- How to publish content to mobile devices such as PocketPC
- How to browse the content catalog using mobile web browser from a PDA-Phone
- How to download the content and play the content in disconnected mode
